Olivia Strange’s practice is multidisciplinary spanning sculpture, installation, painting, drawing, photography and moving image. Strange’s practice is concerned with identifying and deconstructing oppressive patriarchal descriptors and stereotypical identities that are inscribed in everyday materials, colours, objects and emblems. Through employing and subverting traditional material processes and making methods her practice questions these identities and portray an alternative empowering image of female subjectivity whilst refuting binary ideals of ‘femininity' and womxnhood. Themes of mysticism, ‘paradise’ and ‘escape’ are explored in the work which aims to surface queer experience and probe at the roots of normative ideals offering alternative languages for distortion, desire, sexuality, fantasy and power-play.

Strange completed a Master of Fine Art at Chelsea College of Art in 2016 with a Distinction and has since shown at Annka Kulty’s Gallery (London), Southwark Park Galleries (online) and Liminal Gallery and Basis Projektraum Frankfurt (upcoming). She has recently been selected for the 2021 cohort of the London Creative Network Artist Development Programme and is one of 12 selected artists for the Ellipsis Prints 2021 commissioning project designed to promote womxn and non-binary artists.

Strange lives and work in East London.
